Vanilla Extract
I had these dried up vanilla beans lying around, and I just couldn’t throw them away. They were dried to the point where you could literally snap them in half and it’d make this noise. Not usable. But with some vodka I could turn these dried up vanilla beans and make some vanilla extract.

There are actually several other kinds of alcohol types you can use to make extract, I just had extra vodka lying around. The thing with this is that you have to store the extract in a cool dark place for at least 1 month.

Each week I took a picture of the extract to document the change in color as time passed.

Now comes time to store it. I usually use this brand to the left for vanilla, but it’s all gone. It’s great, but to the right is the extract that I made and waited a month for. I thought about how annoying it is to measure out the extract each time you use it. Sometimes I put it in my coffee, and a lot of times I use them for baked goods. I wanted single servings of this extract for comfort and speed.

More soon, thanks for reading…

love the idea of single serve vanilla extract! also, it’s so neat to see the changes week by week!
do you think for posts like this you could also include measurements? (i.e. how much vodka you used etc?) i would love to know!
they look like medicine bags, they look like sterilized, minimal, modern but even a little bit scary (because they evoke the hospital)
That is so cool! How do you keep it from squeezing out?
I love your pants! The packaging of your single serve vanilla extract is pretty neat too. Nice work!
I love the backlit shots. Each post you raise the bar higher. I can’t wait to see what other madness you have in the works.

Lovely post. I’m also curious how you would keep them from dripping everywhere though!
I’m really commenting to ask if you’re having problems with your RSS feed? I can’t find it on Google Reader and it isn’t loading in Chrome from the icon on the top right either. Would love to be able to follow that way!
jesus, why the automatic music?
it’s not from the website, it’s from the videos.
Nice to look at but the packaging is super wasteful. I’d feel bad if I had that much garbage left over for a single serving of vanilla.
Where are your pants from? They’re great!
genius…
this post is sexy. that is all.
Vanilla antibiotic.
That’s what they look like to me if you remove the tips!
Is there a way to follow the journal through Bloglovin?
Unbelievable, you even have the armenian translation for vanilla extract!!! How cool is that!!!
Amazing post!
I’ve been wanting to do this for ages now, and seeing how well yours turned out, now I shall. Beautiful work, as usual; I bet it’s delicious. FYI, though: not that it much matters, but the Finnish on your label is a little bit off; “vaniljasokeria” means “vanilla sugar”, not vanilla extract. The word you want is “vaniljaesanssi”.
these plastic canisters are so freakin’ awesome. what are they originally used for, and where can i get ‘em?!
nevermind, got ‘em!
